AutoMat at RENOVATE Workshop: Innovation and Synergy for Battery Recycling in Lombardy
On October 23, 2025, the Politecnico di Milano's Aula Magna hosted the public workshop "Battery Recycling in Lombardy: It Matters More Than You Think", organized within the European RENOVATE project. A crucial event that saw AutoMat as a key protagonist among the EU-funded projects presented, consolidating its role in the Lombardy innovation ecosystem dedicated to battery recycling.
The event saw significant participation from AutoMat project partners: ERP Italia Servizi, Università degli Studi di Pavia, FAAM, Politecnico di Milano, and Balance were present to represent the strength and multidisciplinary nature of the consortium. This presence demonstrates AutoMat's concrete commitment to building active dialogue with the territory and other stakeholders in the battery recycling ecosystem.
AutoMat and the Synergy of Projects
During the session "What exists in the region and what has been achieved?", Riccardo Morina from ERP Italia Servizi presented the Automat project, highlighting how it integrates seamlessly with other European initiatives active in the region: RENOVATE and BATMASS.
This synergy between projects represents a fundamental added value: each initiative contributes specific expertise and objectives, creating a collaborative network that amplifies the impact of research and innovation in the battery recycling sector.
The workshop demonstrated how rich and strategic the Lombardy ecosystem is in this field. Alongside European projects, initiatives funded by the Lombardy Region were presented, such as the CARAMEL project (UNIBS) and the EcoCirc Initiative of Politecnico di Milano. Special attention was also given to the social acceptance of battery recycling, with participation from AFIL - Associazione Fabbrica Intelligente Lombardia.
Industry, Policy, and the Future
The second part of the event featured a direct dialogue between industry, institutions, and research projects, moderated by Marcello Colledani from Politecnico di Milano. The panel benefited from the active participation of AutoMat partners, with Cristian Gullino from ERP Italia Servizi and Carmen Cavallo from FAAM, alongside the presence of Regione Lombardia, represented by Dario Sciunnach, and leading companies such as Italmatch and Engitec. The discussion enabled concrete assessment of project needs and the mapping of a regional roadmap for the future of battery recycling.
Acknowledgments
AutoMat wishes to thank the RENOVATE project and Professor Eliana Quartarone from Università degli Studi di Pavia, project coordinator, for organizing this important moment of sharing and dialogue, essential for strengthening collaboration between European projects and the Lombardy innovation ecosystem.
AutoMat thus confirms its role as an innovative player in a strategic sector for ecological transition, actively contributing to building a collaborative ecosystem that unites research, industry, and territory.
